Trough Bridge in elaborate design

Timber Trough Bridge in Delfzijl

Description

We were able to realise an extraordinary timber trough bridge for pedestrians and cyclists in Delfzijl/Netherlands directly in front of the North Sea in cooperation with NEXT architects and invraplus. The construction project also includes the construction of a dyke, which is connected to the parking area “De Vennen” by the pedestrian and cycle bridge. The design of the bridge envisages a trough bridge construction, which runs above the running level in the first span and below it in the second span.

The shape of the 65-metre-long bridge follows an unusual design with a dipping main structure and widening bridge width. The structure, made of two block-bonded wooden girders, forms a natural connection between the city and the sea and is the final object of the urban development of Delfzijl. The assembly over the railway tracks was realised within a 48h closure of the rail traffic.
