Block girder bridge over the Sulm

Sulmsteg footbridge and cycle bridge, Neckarsulm

Description

The Sulmsteg bicycle bridge in Neckarsulm is an important junction in the inner-city road network. It replaces a much narrower existing footbridge and connects the city park with the south-eastern part of the city across the Sulm river.

The structure consists of two parallel block girders with a deck made of precast concrete elements and a simple railing with stainless steel mesh infill. A vertically connected steel bearing structure guarantees perfect structural protection of the timber at the support points. The decking reliably protects the supporting structure from the weather thanks to its lateral overhang. This comparatively small bridge is a prime example of a bridge type with high durability, designed with easy assembly and reuse of components in mind. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV).
