Wide Span Functional Bridge

Box Girder Bridge in Ijsselstein - NL

Description

Contemporary functional stuctures acquired their character simply by dimensioning with wood. The innovative box girder design makes wide spans with low overall height possible, here 35 m length at about 1.20 m height. A decking of mastic asphalt creates the necessary roof for the large-sized prefabricated elements. Inside the box girders run invisibly external supply lines.

To increase the durability a cladding made of high quality western red cedar was retrofitted. Thus, the bridge protected on the top and sides – according to the current fee guidelines a lifetime of over 60 years can be expected. Recent studies indicate that protected timber bridges may have a much longer lifespan.
