Sustainable, low-maintenance and restrained in design - the new pioneer footbridge over the Tauber river

Replacement construction of "Pioniersteg" in Weikersheim

Description

The new pioneer footbridge provides safe and convenient access to the sports grounds in Weikersheim. The existing bridge had to be closed due to serious defects – renovation was not economically viable. The new replacement structure is being built at the same location as the Johannessteg in Bad Mergentheim; it is based on the current recommendations for cycle traffic facilities (ERA).

The bridge structure will be designed as a protected timber bridge in accordance with DIN EN 1995-2/NA. The superstructure consists of block-bonded timber girders with an optimised cross-section, which are slightly inclined outwards for structural timber protection. The system is braced by steel frames. The girder height decreases towards the abutments – this creates a slender, aesthetic appearance and reduces maintenance. The decking consists of GRP profiles on larch longitudinal beams.

A stainless steel cable railing (height 1.30 metres) ensures safe use for cyclists and pedestrians. LED spot lighting increases road safety in the dark without disturbing flora and fauna. The new, inclined abutments blend harmoniously into the embankment and emphasise the filigree appearance of the bridge structure.
