Cycle path bridge in Kurpark Bad Mergentheim

Back in 2018, the board of directors of Kurverwaltung Bad Mergentheim GmbH decided to renew the Tauber bridge in the Kurpark. The old bridge was dismantled down to the piers, the piers were renovated accordingly and the new bridge was built in timber construction in spring 2020. The new Kurpark bridge spans the Tauber with a length of approx. 93 m and a width of approx. 3 m. The four structural elements are characterised by stepped block-bonded glulam girders, which are structurally protected by their special shape. The components were designed as continuous beams, the joints as Gerber joints with shadow gaps.
The topic of weather protection was already given great importance in the planning. For example, all edges and steps of the girder were provided with a drip groove to protect against impinging water. The covering of prefabricated concrete slabs additionally protects the bridge girder from the effects of the weather. Furthermore, a monitoring system was installed to monitor the wood moisture content so that any problems that arise can be addressed at an early stage. In total, around 200 m³ of glulam was installed, thus saving around 162 tonnes of CO₂.
