Innovative integral timber-concrete hybrid bridge

New construction of a cycle and footpath bridge over the B16 near Manching, Ingolstadt

Description

The new construction of a cycle and footpath connection in the course of the height clearance in the Manching area requires the lowest possible construction height and great slenderness of the structure. The concept of the integral timber-concrete composite bridge follows this requirement: The superstructure is designed here as a single-span, integral, single-web slab beam in timber-concrete composite construction, the design of which is primarily oriented towards the flow of forces and structural timber protection.
The stepped design of the plate beam in the bridge cross-section increases the protection against driving rain and thus ensures structural timber protection. The static load also results in a variable cross-section height, which is highest in the area of the frame corner. The railing with a height of 1.30 m above the roadway consists of flat steel supports according to RiZ Gel 14, which are fixed to the cap. The infill consists of expanded metal grids in frames, supplemented by a steel handrail clad with an acetylated cover profile of Accoya laminated timber.
Through the use of local spruce wood, approx. 37 tonnes of biogenic CO2 are permanently stored and through the substitution of steel in the main supporting structure, a further approx. 35 tonnes of CO2 are saved. This sustainability aspect is supported by the availability of the building material wood on site, which avoids long transport routes. Start of construction is planned for early 24.
